14 Years of Tourism Quality and Sustainability in the Falkland Islands

Kevin Millington is back in the Falkland Islands working with the Falkland Islands Tourist Board on accommodation quality, sustainability assessments and visitor research.
This year, Kevin is grading 50 serviced and self-catering accommodation businesses, covering around 95% of the Islands’ visitor accommodation. The assessments use the accommodation grading scheme developed by Acorn.
Since its introduction, the scheme has supported steady improvements in accommodation quality while giving visitors clearer guidance on what to expect when planning their stay.
Kevin is also carrying out 47 Green Seal assessments across accommodation providers, tour operators and restaurants. Developed by Acorn specifically for the Falkland Islands, the scheme assesses businesses at Member, Silver and Gold levels, covering areas including waste reduction, energy use, purchasing practices, and health and safety. Over time, businesses have continued to improve their performance across these areas.
The visit also includes refresher training for FITB staff on undertaking air, cruise and domestic visitor surveys. These surveys collect information on visitor expenditure, trip characteristics and visitor profiles, helping FITB build a stronger evidence base for tourism planning and decision making.
Alongside this work, Kevin is supporting FITB in completing its Green Destinations Good Travel Seal Level 2 submission, continuing the Islands’ work to strengthen sustainability practices across its tourism industry.
